Data and fibre

Data cabling and fibre for Ponsonby homes and offices

Fast fibre to the door is only half the story. Data cabling in Ponsonby is about getting that connection to the desk, the TV and the far bedroom of a long villa, or to every till and workstation in a Ponsonby Road business, reliably and without cables taped along the skirting boards.

Why a cable still matters

Fibre is now the most common way New Zealanders connect to the internet, at home and at work. Chorus, the fibre network company, notes that where your modem sits can make a big difference to broadband performance, and that if the speed is fine near the modem but drops away in other parts of the house, you may need mesh units or extenders to reach them.

In a long Ponsonby villa, with the modem at the front where the line came in and the study at the back, that is a familiar story. WiFi has to pass through several walls and a hallway to get there. A data cable does not. Running a wired network point to the rooms that matter most, the home office, the TV and the spot where a WiFi access point does the most good, gives those places a steady connection and leaves the WiFi free for phones and laptops.

Starting from where the fibre comes in

Every good data installation starts with a plan of where things go. The fibre connection arrives at one point in the building, and the modem usually lives near it. From there we work out the best place for the heart of the network, often a small cabinet in a hall cupboard or under the stairs, and run cable from it to each room that needs a wired point.

In an older house the cable takes the same paths as power cabling does: through the ceiling space, under the floor and down inside the walls. If you are planning a rewire or a renovation, that is the cheapest time of all to add data, because the walls are open and the route is already being worked out.

Offices, shops and studios

A Ponsonby Road business depends on its network more than most people notice: EFTPOS terminals, point-of-sale screens, booking systems, music, cameras and the office computers upstairs. We cable those back to a tidy patch panel so every point is labelled and every fault can be traced, and we can set the network up alongside power and lighting during a fit-out.

The street's older brick buildings make cable routes harder to find, and a tenancy that shares a building with others may have to keep its cabling within its own space. We work that out before we start. Our commercial electrical page covers the rest of a business fit-out.

Data cabling questions

Do I need data cabling if I already have mesh WiFi?

Not always. Mesh works well in many homes. Cabling still helps where a room needs a steady, fast connection, and mesh units themselves work better when they are linked back to the modem by cable rather than by WiFi.

Can you move where my fibre modem sits?

We can run cabling so the modem, or a network cabinet, sits somewhere more central than the point where the connection enters the house. Anything to do with the fibre network company's own equipment stays with them.

Can you mount our TV and hide the cables?

Yes. Wall-mounting a TV, with power and data run inside the wall so nothing hangs below it, is part of our TV and home entertainment work.

Do you cable security cameras?

Yes. Home security, including alarms and camera systems, is one of our services, and a cabled camera does not depend on the WiFi signal reaching it.

Can you cable a whole office floor?

Yes. We cable offices and shops as well as homes, whether it is a few desks upstairs on Ponsonby Road or a full floor in a newer building.
